Bowser's Fury
Do NOT google Bowsers Furry worst mistake of my life
All the mechanics and extremely tight design of 3d world remixed into a 3-6 hour long combo meal. Doesn't quite reach the same level of challenge as it's predecessor. Best boss fights of the whole series. The goomba shoe returns as an iceskate. You can go super saiyan cat mode. Blue toad is there.

Super Mario 3D World
in 2013 mario will be 3d
Probably the most underappreciated game of the series, perfectly marrying the timed course clearing level design of the 2d games with the movement of the 3d games. Offers an absolute buffet of levels hitting you with secret world after secret world. The latter ones reach just the right level of ball crushing difficulty. The four player co-op mode is in fact a free for all deathbattle for the crown. Once again you can tell mario to fuck himself and play the entire game as blue toad (blue toad I love you so much). Probably the only missed opportunity is the lack of secret goals and alternate map routes ala mario world. Never quite reaches the highs of the other 3d games but stays consistently good throughout the entire affair.

Super Mario Galaxy 2
Galaxy 2 the future
Here nintendo took the already tightly designed galaxy and polished it to an absolute mirror finish. Yoshi is back and I just know that blimp fruit powerup has activated something in the young minds of many players. The hub is much less soulful than galaxy 1's observatory but also much less obtrusive to navigate. And just what are the hell valley sky trees?

Super Mario Galaxy
In space no one can hear you YAHOO
This is it. At the age of 8 I received a wii with this game for my birthday and from that point on was locked into the archetype of mario autist. No regrets. Sheds many of the movement options from sunshine and even 64 in exchange for some of the tightest level design the series has ever seen. Constantly throwing new ideas at you and moving on before they overstay their welcome. Freezeflame galaxy my beloved. Gorgeous orchestral soundtrack. The motion controls are fairly unobtrusive and hold up today but over covid I 100% the game on dolphin using an xbox 360 controller and it played just as well. Exactly one bullshit hard part (you know the one, where you gotta clear all the rubble by throwing bombs on an extremely short timer) but fortunately that's optional.

Super Mario Sunshine
Mario's big beach blunder
This one needed just a little more time in the oven. I can respect the ambition with all the big set peice levels, the cohesive theming and more realistic level design, and while in theory all the movement options fluud unlocks SHOULD elevate this above mario 64 it just doesn't come together. Too many friction points, the water melon rolling part, the chucksters, the FUCKING lilly pad level. The biggest mistep was ditching the open ended level section process that 64 had, forcing you to do the levels of each stage in order. 30 of the shines actually being blue coins you gotta collect and then trade in is another fault. Despite this the game is still quite fun, but it doesn't compare favorably to 64 or galaxy.

Super Mario 64
Superb Mario Brothers
There is exactly one flaw in this game, right at the top of wet dry world the camera gets a little fucky and won't go behind you. Outside of that the game is actually perfect. You can now run and jump in 360 degrees of freedom and it feels phenomenal. The castle is a joy to explore and lets you largely play the levels in any order you wish to. The music and atmosphere in Jolly Rodger Bay make me feel like everything is going to be okay.

Super Mario World
It's a mario's world and we're just living in it
I go back and forth on if this or mario 3 is the best 2d platformer in the series. You really can't go wrong with either. They ditched the wandering enemies and toad houses for the world map but introduced secret exits that unlock alternate paths and other goodies which is something to this day nintendo has not been able to top in a 2d mario game. Yoshi augments the running and jumping gameplay perfectly and the bongos that come in when you hop on are just *chefs kiss*. At this point nintedo figured you should probably make beating the game more manageable and put the dick crushing levels in as secrets. (good idea). There is a Trent Reznor reference.

Super Mario Bros. 3
To hell with the sun
"what if we made a more direct sequel to the first mario bros but it wasn't ball crushingly difficult right out the gate and there was a sweet world map with like roaming enemies and you have an inventory for items and there's like cool minigames and stuff?" -Nintendo Miyamoto It's absolutely incredible what they were able to squeeze out of NES in '88. The world map gives you a great sense of progress and adventure and that trick they pull in world 5 got me pogging. Packed to the brim with secrets. Get ball crushing near the end but does a great job of slowly ramping up the challenge. Farm coins in the first world 7 fortress and you'll be fine.

Super Mario Bros. 2
Mario 2 the future
yeah yeah yeah everyone knows this wasn't a mario game at first SHUT UP MATPAT GET OUT OF MY HEAD Introduces to the mario series groundbreaking new mechanics like scrolling the screen up, down, or to the left. You still gotta jump on baddies heads but now you can pick em up and throw em. You can also tell mario to go fuck himself and play through the entire game as luigi or blue toad (my beloved). Some extremely interesting mechanics involving a magic potion item you find to then enter a dark world where you can find mushrooms to increase your healthbar or collect coins to use for a one up slot machine between levels, or even warp to much later levels. Luigi floating on an egg over the sea.

Sin and Punishment
We have Evangelion at home
Exceptionally stylish rail-shooter and a real breath of fresh air among the N64's library. You can blast through the whole game in about an hour but you will come back again and again to try and 1CC it (I have not yet done so it gets pretty hard near the end). Absolutely incomprehensible storyline. The final boss fight is against an evil clone of the planet earth no i'm not bullshitting play the damn game yourself and find out.

Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels
Cock and Ball Torture
The target audience for this game is japanese kids who spent the summer of '85 obsessively playing the first mario bros and if you are outside of that demographic you probably won't like it that much. Begins by hitting you in the dick with a hammer and as you progress through the game the hammers only get bigger and spikier.

Super Mario Bros.
What if when mario punched a brick he broke his hand???
In September of last year (to commemorate the 40th anniversary) I played this old fucking game everyday until I could beat it in one sitting. This took only a week, and upon completion I played it until I could beat it without using any warp zones. Very fun and I'd recommend anyone who isn't already into NES games give it a shot. Basically 80% of what makes a mario game (or more broadly any 2d platformer) good is there. Running and jumping is smooth and satisfying. Level design introduces and then progressively steps up various enemy encounters and pitfalls. Lots of fun secrets like all the hidden 1-ups and the fireworks when you clear a level with the timer at a certian number. Enormous historical significance, the rock on which modern nintendo has built their empire. mama mia time to take a piss

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
Yoshi gets high in this game
One of the last times nintendo would truly innovate on platformer design. This is a throwing type platformer in the vein of mario 2 rather than the more familiar jumping type platformers (mario 1, 3, world ect ect). Unique scoring system that pushes you to 100% the game. Each level is stuffed with little secrets. Beautiful hand drawn looking graphics with some 3d effects that must have been jaw dropping in '95. The overworld music is so good you don't wanna start any of the levels except when you do the music in the levels is EVEN BETTER. Maybe the only missed opportunity is the lack of alternate routes on the map screen that made mario world so cool. Additionally .3 points are deducted for how grating baby mario's screams are when you get hit. If you know you know.

CAPATALIST SCUM
They want your money and they want you dead. Ads after every game. You need the premium membership for more than one game review per day. Vastly inferior to lichess. That said I still play here when I'm under the influence and don't want to tank my elo.

Sculpting the most fucked up looking radioactive green orc in the character creator is worth the price of admission alone. In nearly all ways a step down from Morrowind, though still enjoyable.
